Promising signs for Mike Gillick’s men

Richy McIver got two tries as Shelford came from behind to beat previously unbeaten Sidcup 32-24 in National League Three, London & SE.

Josh Simmons landed the first points for Shelford through an early penalty, but four successful kicks from Joshua Twyford meant that the hosts led 12-3 after 38 minutes.

But a try from Simon Hrbek, converted by Josh Simmons, reduced the arrears, and Shelford were back in front when hooker Rob Gardner touched down.

Charlie Hopkins’ try gave Sidcup a 17-15 advantage but McIver’s first try, and a penalty from Hrbek, made it 25-17.

And then McIver’s second try, converted by Hrbek, sealed the win before Sidcup’s late consolation try.

“We showed promising signs of maturing trust in our defensive systems, confidence in attack and patience in most areas of the game,” said Shelford head coach Mike Gillick.

“We were competitive at the set piece, but disappointed that we lost the penalty count.

“But it was another good step in the right direction.”
