Tuli Paea grabs a hat-trick in win

Tuli Paea touched down three times for Shelford as they produced a crushing 50-12 win at Westcliff in National League Three, London & SE.

The teams went into the match level in the table, while Shelford had won the reverse game by one point.

With Chris Cutts back from injury, the front row was strong, and with a well-functioning line-out, Shelford’s backs had a solid platform to play off.

Into a strong wind, Shelford defended with great discipline in the first half, maintaining possession well and only conceding three penalties.

From a break in their own 22 and two rucks later, Mark Ryder touched down in the corner, with Josh Simmons adding the conversion.

Minutes later, Paea got his first try after a break from 50 yards. Westcliff did manage an unconverted try to make it 12-5 at half time.

But the second period belonged to Shelford. Simmons was having his best game of the season, pulling the strings alongside Warrick Anderson and Greg White as they exerted their authority on the game.

Paea completed his hat-trick, Ryder got two more and Simon Hrbek, Simmons and Aki Lea got one apiece, with Westcliff getting a late consolation.

Head coach Gareth Evans said: “The forwards laid the platform, but it was the backs who starred and showed what a force they have become.”
