Bad day at the office in Surrey
Shelford produced one of their worst performances of the season as they were beaten 42-19 at Sutton & Epsom in National League Three, London & SE.
A converted try from Dave Hill had helped Shelford into a 7-3 lead after 35 minutes, and they appeared to have the measure of their hosts.
But a missed clearance and some abject defence allowed Sutton’s full-back to run in for a try from 55 yards and, after another equally soft score by the hosts’ fly-half and a converted penalty, Sutton had turned the game on its head to lead 18-7 at half time.
Shelford made a good start to the second half thanks to a well-worked try from Simon Hrbek.
However, they appeared to lose heart and error upon error and missed tackles allowed Sutton to race clear.
Returning open-side flanker Jamie Beswick got a good try for the visitors, but it failed to rouse them from their slumbers and a kick and chase in the last play of the game saw Sutton get the final try to complete their win.
Shelford have work to do after struggling at the scrum and losing three line-outs in a row as they chased a fourth bonus point, especially as they still have to play the top four sides in the league.
