Progress made in England Hockey Mixed Tier 1 Championships
Sophie McComish and Chris Pearson grabbed braces for Cambridge South as they reached the second round of the England Hockey Mixed Tier 1 Championships with a 4-2 win over Watton.
The visitors’ keeper Lino Di Lorenzo had provided stubborn resistance before McComish finally broke the deadlock.
Watton equalised early in the second half, but Pearson restored South’s advantage. Watton again struck back to make it 2-2, but further goals from Pearson and McComish saw South progress.
On Saturday, South’s men’s teams earned three wins, a draw and a defeat in the East Men’s League.
In their first match at the National Hockey Stadium, South firsts recovered from 2-0 down against Crostyx to draw 2-2 in 2S.
Crostyx struck in the first half, but South hit back after the break through Jack Chalk and Pearson, with Mariano Rosenzvaig setting up both goals.
James Menzies struck late for South II as they won 3-2 at Bourne Deeping IV in 4NW.
Toby Watson and Ash Dookun twice put South ahead, both times set up by Jon Mann, but Bourne fought back on each occasion.
However, Menzies scored 10 minutes from time to lift South two points off second-placed Cambridge City V.
South III lost 4-3 to Bourne Deeping III in 4NW, despite two goals from Dom Nelson and one from Jimmy Wood.
Two goals in two minutes from Oli Anderson and Dave Monck saw South IV bounce back from going a goal down to beat St Ives V 2-1 to keep their place at the top of the 6NW (S) table.
Pip Ho scored for South V as they drew 1-1 against St Neots V.
In the East Women’s Leagues, Cambridge South II took advantage of a slip up elsewhere to return top of 4NW (S) with a 4-1 win over Cambridge City V.
Izzy MacDonald-Parry notched a double and Lucy Davidson and Annie Quantrill got one apiece.
But a goal from Emily Stevenson could not stop South IV losing 3-1 to St Neots IV in 5NW (S).
In the Investec Women’s League, Conference East, Ella Dowling, Rebecca Daniel and Helen Richardson-Walsh scored for Cambridge City in a 3-0 win over Chelmsford.
But City lost 2-1 to Old Loughtonians in Men’s Hockey League, Conference East, with Warren D’Souza getting their goal.
