Double victory over The Leys to reach next rounds
There was double derby delight for The Perse School over The Leys School in the National Schools Cup.
In the clash at under-18 level, the Leys opened the scoring with a converted try.
George Doel dotted down for the Perse, only for the Leys to respond with a penalty to make it 10-5.
The hosts took the lead for the first time as captain Matt Burson touched down, and James Tee added the conversion.
A converted try from the Leys early in the second half saw them regain a 17-12 lead, but the Perse had the final say as Elijah Price touched down and Tee added the extras for a 19-17 win.
The Perse go on to face Rugby School in the next round and head of rugby Liam St John said: “It was a thrilling spectacle, as it always is in a cross-city derby, and it was great to see a big crowd.
“I’m so pleased for the boys because they’ve had a really tough start to the season. We were down towards the end of the game, fought back and you could see how much it meant to them. It was just sheer heart and guts to get over the line and get the win.”
The victory for the Perse’s under-15s was much more emphatic, with a 50-10 win at The Leys.
Ollie Rogers got the first try, and that was added to in the first half by one from Alex Burson and two from Charlie Underwood, with Robert Gwilt adding two conversions as they built up a 24-0 lead. It was helped by the forward pack of Charlie Clifton, Ishaan Chatterjee and Yujian Zou leading the charge.
Rogers completed his try hat-trick after half time, and Freddie Brierley and Burson were also on the scoresheet as they sealed victory. The Leys scored two late consolation tries.
The under-15s will face Oundle School in the next round.
