Regional success in Lady Taverner’s competition

The Perse School girls’ under-15 cricket team will create history having qualified to play at Lord’s.

They reached the national final of the Lady Taverners schools’ tournament, after winning the regional competition for the first time.

In the Midlands & Eastern finals, they beat schools from Leicestershire, Suffolk and Norfolk to top their pool.

They beat all three sides to top the pool, with some prolific wicket-taking through consistent bowling and a combination of clever batting, with hitting numerous sixes leading to the Perse chasing down opposition totals with relative ease.

The Perse faced Cedars Upper School from Bedfordshire in the semi-finals, and despite some strong batting, they bowled tightly before then finding regular gaps in the field during their reply to triumph within seven of the eight overs.

The Perse faced Norwich School in the final and, having already beaten them in the pool stage, they were set a target of 79 to chase down.

Captain Vicky Leung and Suzanna Arbide were both forced to retire, but the team continued towards their target and scored three off the final over to clinch victory and a spot in the national finals.

Games coach Nicky Bareham was thrilled with the team’s historic qualification for the finals at the home of cricket.

She said: “The whole team played extremely well all day, although special mention should be made to Bella Howarth (Year 8), playing up into the under-15 team, who took 10 wickets across the day, captain Vicky Leung, who took nine wickets, and Suzanna Arbide, who took a large number of catches and run-outs as wicketkeeper.

“We congratulate the team on this superb achievement and wish the girls the very best of luck in the final.”
