Time travellers will be the theme of this year’s festival as the annual community celebration, which is run by volunteers, returns for a 33rd outing.
The festival day, which takes place on Saturday, September 22, is the finale of a week-long programme of activities which start on September 15.
It takes place at the Recreation Ground in Cherry Hinton, and the theme will cover the whole of the space-time continuum: from a galaxy far, far away, to the Jurassic period, to the 17th century, and the 1980s.
New for 2018 is an undercover eating area, so visitors can enjoy lunch from Cambridge’s street food favourites come rain or shine. After last year’s wet conditions, the organisers are hoping for the latter this time.
Events manager Kate Jones – now in her fifth year of being involved – said: “This year we’ve teamed up with Thirsty Cambridge and they’ll be bringing their Biergarten to St Andrew’s Church – so we’re going to have a nice outdoor beer garden there. That’s on the first Saturday, the 15th.”
Kate continued: “We’ve also teamed up with the Cambridge Film Festival, so they’re going to bring a pop-up cinema and we’re going to be showing Paddington 2, so people can have a beer, they can watch the movie. That’s going to be a very nice relaxing afternoon.
“And we’re going to kick the whole thing off with the Cherry Hinton Bell Ringers who are going to do a peal at 3pm to announce the start of everything.”
Other attractions on festival day include a 100-seat planetarium – the biggest mobile planetarium in the UK – a dinosaur exhibit with an animatronic dinosaur, interactive military drills with 17th century soldiers, Daleks, and a Back to the Future DeLorean.
“There’s tons going on,” said Kate, “and it’s all free. It’s a lovely day for everyone to come and have a nice time with friends and family.”
The festival is sponsored by Arm.
