The artist also known as Ben Drew put on an outstanding show at a rain-soaked July Course on Friday, July 27.

As a long-time fan, one of the first things I noticed about the singer/songwriter/rapper was that he seemed to have lost a lot of weight. I loved the white face paint and slicked back hair look and was impressed by his newer songs as much as the older material.

Songs which featured from his latest album, Heaven Before All Hell Breaks Loose, included opening numbers, Grateful and Heartbeat, as well as Stranger, Queue Jumping, Wait So Long and It’s a War – and I think I actually preferred the more soulful, less hip-hop stuff.

Love Goes Down, off his 2010 record, The Defamation of Strickland Banks, was performed acoustically, further demonstrating the immense talent that this 34-year-old Londoner possesses.

Ill Manors, the title track of the 2012 film of the same name – which Drew also wrote and directed – offered another burst of his impressive energy.

Although all the songs were great, I have to say that my favorite was Stay Too Long, the last track of the evening, which followed a cover of Chase & Status’ End Credits and Mercy, from the new album.

It was an excellent all-round performance, despite the adverse weather conditions, and the grateful artist thanked the crowd for turning out in the rain.
