Jenny Culank, the director of the play, is the artistic director of Classworks Theatre, which she co-founded in Cambridge in the 1980s initially as a youth theatre company.

The company became known for its extremely innovative work and its mission to engage young people in creating unusual and demanding theatre projects.

Classworks was the first winner of The Independent Award for the best production on the Edinburgh Fringe. The group developed to include a small professional touring company, mainly reaching out to schools and colleges, and Classworks’ reputation grew creating new work with writers and touring nationally.

It has also represented Cambridge further afield, in Latvia, Poland, Finland, Belfast, America and Germany.

The writer of No Surrender, Ros Connelly, also has a long association with Cambridge, starting with her days as a student at Newnham College and then living and writing in the city for the last 32 years.

She co-founded Cambridge Devised Theatre, which has developed plays about iconic women such as Ellen Terry and Emily Wilding Davison and produced shorter pieces for specific occasions, including interludes for Anglia Ruskin conferences and the Rochester Dickens Festival.

Together with the actor Emma Spearing and actor/musician Julia Stone, Jenny and Ros have been working on this exciting new Classworks Theatre production about the power of protest and the unlikely suffragette and prison reformer Constance Lytton.

They plan to tour No Surrender next spring but Cambridge audiences will see it first, and Classworks look forward to hearing their feedback.

The play is suitable for age 14+.

Sunday, October 14, 7.30 pm at the Cambridge Junction
