The finest small and medium-sized enterprises in the county were recognised at the annual SME Cambridgeshire Business Awards, where it was revealed that the Cambridge Independent will be taking over the event next year.
The awards, which we have supported as media partner for three years, celebrate individuals and companies offering fantastic service, showing innovation and delivering growth.
Held at IWM Duxford, the overall winner was Green Custard, which also won the Woodfines Business of the Year Less Than 50 Employees category. The Cambridge-based software consultancy, which marks its 10th year last month, is supporting fast-growing start-ups as they become global enterprises.
Jonathan Custance, a director at Green Custard, said: “We’re thrilled to win, especially the second award which was a huge surprise. It’s great for our team to get the recognition they deserve, and it motivates us to keep improving for our staff, partners, and customers.”
The Ann Pettengell Employer of the Year award went to Premier Travel.
Paul Waters, director at Premier Travel, said: “We’re incredibly honoured. Our motto is ‘It’s all about the people’, and our success is down to the hard work, loyalty and dedication of our staff. Over the last 18 months we have continued to implement new initiatives to look after and recognise our staff, including employing a dedicated training manager, undergoing mental health courses to learn how to identify mental health issues in the workplace, and launching a staff awards scheme.”
Taking home both the Regus Best Enterprising Business and Calver Wealth Management Business Innovation awards was PervasID, the St John’s Innovation Centre-based technology company that creates passive RFID tag-reading solutions used to keep track of assets and stock in retail, healthcare, manufacturing and logistics.
“We are absolutely delighted,” said Dr Sabesan Sithamparanathan, co-founder and CEO of PervasID. “To be given this kind of recognition is a real motivator for our talented R&D team, who are constantly refining our core technology to ensure we remain at the forefront of RFID tag detection with unmatched accuracy.”
The winners will automatically be entered as finalists in the SME National Business Awards Finals, that will be held at Wembley Stadium in December 2019.
Organised this year by Events & PR, which will continue to support them, the awards will be run next year by the Cambridge Independent and its publisher Iliffe Media.
Winners will continue to have the chance to progress to the National SME Business Awards finals.
After the event, Damian Cummins, director of Events & PR, said: “What a great evening celebrating the very best of SMEs from across Cambridgeshire.
“The quality of this year’s entrants was phenomenal with brilliant finalists in all categories, it was so so close from such a rich and wide variety of entrants. We look forward to passing the baton to the Cambridge Independent, which will no doubt bring the awards to the next level next year.”
Paul Brackley, editor of the Cambridge Independent, said: “We are delighted to be taking the lead on the 2020 awards and building on the good work of Events & PR. We look forward to celebrating the great work of SMEs across Cambridgeshire, and congratulate all this year’s winners.”
