Cambridge occupational therapist Mara Sheldon tackles symptom management

Cambridge-based Mara Sheldon believes she may be the only occupational therapist in the UK offering private practice services specifically for symptom management – fatigue, breathlessness, etc – and for conditions such as long Covid and cancer.

She is keen to stress that the treatment she provides is available on the NHS, but that she doesn’t know of anyone else working in private practice in this way. Mara qualified in 1999 and trained in hypnosis in 2013 while working at the Arthur Rank Hospice.

“I currently work part time with the breathlessness intervention service at Addenbrooke’s, and there are some amazing occupational therapists there,” she said. “I’m just starting up now working in Cambridge, I’ve got a consulting room.

“I’m only doing one day a week at the moment but I’m hoping that that’s going to increase. I do lot of my work via Zoom and it works really well.” She added: “I also do supervision for occupational therapists working in palliative care.”
