Help Owlstone Medical make a life-saving difference - join its team

Owlstone Medical is on a mission that matters – and it’s on the lookout for smart people to join the team.

The company’s goal is to save 100,000 lives and $1.5billion in healthcare costs through Breath Biopsy.

This unique, industry-leading technology analyses exhaled breath for biomarkers of disease, enabling crucial early detection and helping to stratify patients for precision medicine.

Developing it are a diverse team of engineers, chemists, translational biologists, project managers and specialist support staff, predominately based at Owlstone’s head offices on Cambridge Science Park, with a number of other staff working from other locations, including in the US.

Breath Biopsy is already in use in academic, clinical and pharmaceutical research at sites all over the world, and Owlstone says: “We’re only just getting started on its potential.”

It was in 2004 that Owlstone Inc spun out of the University of Cambridge aiming to develop the applications of field asymmetric ion mobility spectroscopy (FAIMS).

One of the original co-founders was engineering graduate Billy Boyle, who began to focus on the medical applications of FAIMS technology after his wife, Kate, was diagnosed and later died of colon cancer as a result of a late diagnosis.

Working closely with clinical partners who integrated FAIMS technology across a broad spectrum of research studies, $7m in funding was secured to launch Owlstone Medical, and Billy became founding CEO in March 2016.

As of 2021, the company has secured more than $150million of investment and has developed Breath Biopsy with the goal of creating non-invasive breath tests to support early detection and precision medicine of diseases including cancer, asthma, COPD and liver disease. The company works with leading academic institutions and industry leaders, including AstraZeneca, J&J and GSK.

Owlstone says: “We are scientists, doctors, engineers and entrepreneurs on a mission to save lives through early detection and precision medicine.

“We’ve had many successes on the way, and some of the things we’ve tried haven’t worked so well. If you apply and are invited for an interview, feel free to ask us about them. Being able to rapidly pivot

and adapt to new opportunities is a key feature for most successful start-ups.

“We currently balance providing world-leading services that support breath research with conducting our own studies to develop new breath tests, and creating tools and technologies which will enable easy-access breath testing in the clinical setting. We reward dedication, dynamism and ability with a competitive salary, share options and an array of benefits.”

At Owlstone Medical, everyone makes a difference. Why not see if you can too?
