Ki Hydrogen secures £470,000 Innovate UK grant for green hydrogen solution

Carbon13 graduate Ki Hydrogen has secured a £470,000 Innovate UK grant.

Ki Hydrogen’s method produces green hydrogen from waste biomass via a direct electrolysis process. This method is not only more cost-competitive (around $2/kg), it requires 50 per cent less energy than alternative green hydrogen production processes like water electrolysis.

The process takes waste biomass – paper, wood, or from the brewing process—and via an electrolysis process, converts it not only into green hydrogen but several useful chemical co-products that open up alternative revenue streams.

Koji Muto, CEO of Ki Hydrogen, said: “We're delighted that Ki Hydrogen has won this Innovate UK Smart Grant.

“Our project was chosen for both its innovation and scalability, promising significant national and international impact. We look forward to advancing our biomass electrolysis technology and hitting the next milestone on our journey to cost-competitive green hydrogen.”

Louis Warner, partner at G-Force – also investing – called Ki Hydrogen “the best team we could find who are working on a realistic path to cost-competitive green hydrogen”.
