A new restaurant-quality food service has started delivering to homes in Cambridge.

Prepped has been started by Stapleford resident Simon Crosbie, an advertising executive, and Steve Mann, who lives in Newnham and has a background in food, and in recruitment. They are joined by director of food Emma Duggan, a chef who worked for a Gordon Ramsey diner in London and former senior head chef for Angela Hartnett. Steve, Simon and Emma have all known each other since sixth form in Cambridge.

Customers have two menus to choose from – a ready-meal selection, and a range of meal kits which include ingredients you cook at home.

“You’ve got the ingredients and you put it together at home, so with the pork belly we’ve roasted it for four to five hours, you put it in the oven,” says Simon, “and I’m always blown away by the vegetarian dishes Emma creates.

“Our core offering is the meal kits, which are restaurant-level dishes that we prepare and do all the hard work for so they take 20 to 30 minutes to pull together at home.

“A good example is the slow roasted pork belly with chorizo and cider cream on this week’s menu - we’ve slow roasted the pork belly for four or five hours and made the cider cream: we also supply the chorizo and some seasonal greens. This dish then takes 20 minutes max to pull together as home - you reheat the pork belly, chop and cook the chorizo then add the cider cream, steam the seasonal greens... and that’s it!”

Prepped started trading earlier this year but was itself being prepped for a lot longer.

“Prepped was born out of wanting to get dinner and having to queue before getting home,” says Simon of his time as a commuter to London. “The original concept was that people could pick up their food when they got off the train, but given the pandemic we had to pivot.”

Meals are prepared at a facility off Coldhams Road.

“We started in a food truck at Audley End, so in a very short space of time we’ve had to react, its kept us busy. We haven’t done a huge promotion as we’re waiting on a more permanent home but this is where we are until the end of the year. We haven’t stopped trading since the start of his year.

“Emma’s background is nigh-on unrepeatable which is the big difference for us from others. We’re looking to take on a second person in the kitchen.”

Meals are currently delivered by van, currently on Thursday (between 4pm and 7pm) and and Saturday (12 to 3pm).

“In Cambridge we want to do it in as green a way as possible. We are looking to use a local company like Outspoken for the delivery, but for the villages we have to do it in a van.”

Meals are currently delivered within a five-mile radius of Cambridge including Babraham, Harston, The Shelfords and Madingley - and within five miles of Saffron Walden. Opening hours are 4pm to 7pm Thursday, 12 to 3pm Saturday (Saffron Walden only, 4pm to 7pm).

Next up - desserts (from next week), lunch boxes and BBQ kits.
