Property experts get insight into £300m Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital

Leading figures in the Cambridge property community were given a special insight at The Bradfield Centre to what is described as the new hospital that will change the story of cancer forever.

Construction of the Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital on Cambridge Biomedical Campus will begin in 2026 and it is due to open in 2029.

After health secretary Wes Streeting gave the project the final green light last month, Mantle Space, the flexible office specialist that manages The Bradfield Centre on Cambridge Science Park, hosted last Tuesday’s awareness-raising event ahead of fundraising efforts for the hospital.

Guests heard how two-thirds of the £300million hospital’s cost will come from the government and one-third from philanthropy, with Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT) committing to raising £14million through local donations to support the project.

“The CCRH will directly contribute to a once-in-a-generation step change in the way the world approaches cancer diagnosis and treatment,” said Mantle CEO Guy Baker, who was invited to get involved in the project by the ACT fundraising committee.

“That’s why we’re hoping the Cambridge property community will get behind the project with philanthropic support. After all, one in two of us will get cancer at some stage in our lives – so it touches everyone.

“Half of people diagnosed with cancer today could potentially have been diagnosed seven years ago. Think how easier their treatment, higher their survival rate and lower the cost would have been if they’d been diagnosed that long ago. We also need to harness genetic data and AI analysis to develop much more precise and tailored treatments that are more effective and have fewer side effects.”

Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital is a collaboration between the University of Cambridge and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and will combine NHS clinical space with three new state-of-the-art research institutes.

It will aim to accelerate the early detection of cancer and the prevention of illness, and lead the way in delivering bespoke, precision treatments that will radically improve patient outcomes, not only in Cambridge and the rest of the UK but worldwide.
