The first is due for completion by the end of the year, and includes an extension to the gym, a soft play area with sensory space, an upgraded café and studios for classes such as yoga, Pilates, and meditation.

Nathan Swift, director at the Cambridge architects, said: “Ensuring that leisure facilities are meeting the needs of local communities is so important, which is why we put people at the centre of our designs. Leisure centres provide more than a place for exercise, but a place for relaxation and socialising – so it’s great to be able to retain the centre’s history while adapting it for the modern-day gym-goer.

“The leisure centre, managed by Abbeycroft Leisure, has been modernised over the years but this latest refurbishment is set to revolutionise and adapt the centre for years to come.”
