The stage is set to announce the winners of the Cambridge Independent’s Entrepreneurial Science and Technology Awards.

Taking place today - September 21, a year to the day after the paper was launched - the awards will be held after Venturefest East, the business showcase event at Newmarket Racecourse, which is supported by the Cambridge Independent.

Some of the brightest minds in Cambridge are coming to the event, where awards will be made across five categories – artificial intelligence, biotech, cleantech, fintech and medtech.

Start-up and scale-up companies were invited to apply to the awards, demonstrating the impact of their work.

The challenge of determining the winners fell to a judging panel that included renowned Cambridge entrepreneurs Charles Cotton and Hermann Hauser, Julia Gwilt, partner at intellectual property firm Appleyard Lees, Nick Sayer, from Woodfines Solicitors, Lindsey Copland, from Grant Thornton, the finance and business advisers, and Caroline Austin, from pharma giant AstraZeneca.

Cambridge Independent editor Paul Brackley, who chaired the panel, said: “We were hugely impressed by the quality and quantity of entries to these awards, which showcase the extraordinary talent in science and technology here.

“The start-ups and scale-ups that we will be celebrating at our awards ceremony this week are poised to make a huge impact in their fields. We are excited to be hosting the awards and look forward to revealing the winners.

“The awards night also represents a great opportunity for us to mark our one-year anniversary.

“We are delighted with the support the community has shown us since our launch last September and we look forward to continuing to celebrate the region we live in.”

Representatives from the award sponsors – Appleyard Lees, Woodfines Solicitors, Grant Thornton and global workspace company Regus – will help to present the awards.

Mentoring prizes will also be handed out by Appleyard Lees and the awards supporters – AstraZeneca, ideaSpace, Enabling Tech Capital, World Nano Foundation and World Science Aid.
