The Cambridge Independent wins Weekly Newspaper of the Year for the fourth time running at the newsawards
The Cambridge Independent has been named Weekly Newspaper of the Year at the national newsawards 2021 - for the fourth time running.
The awards - one of the highlights of the industry’s calendar - were held on Thursday (November 11) night at the Royal Lancaster London.
Organised by Production Journal in association with Fujifilm, the awards recognise the best of local, regional and national media.
The judges said: “For the fourth successive year, this magnificent stitched and trimmed magazine-style weekly scored highly with all the judges. It was striking, superbly produced, cleanly printed with a high story count. One judge asked if it was produced by a national newspaper publisher.”
The Cambridge Independent, published by the independent, family-owned Iliffe Media, has previously won the title in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The awards were not held in 2020 due to the pandemic, meaning the newspaper has clinched this national award every time since its launch in September 2016.
Editor Paul Brackley said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this title for the fourth time in a row. It is a tribute to the dedication of the team, who work so hard every week.
“I would like to thank all of our readers, contributors, supporters and advertisers for their backing - it is really appreciated.”
Ham & High was highly commended in the category, which was sponsored by The Printing Charity, while the Hereford Times was commended. Also shortlisted was The National (Wales) and four other titles from Iliffe Media - Kent Messenger, Lynn News, Newbury Weekly News and Stratford Herald.
Iliffe Media’s Kent Online website was highly commended in the News Website of the Year award, clinched by the Liverpool Echo.
And the Cambridge Independent’s sister magazine, Velvet, was shortlisted in the Regional Supplement/Magazine of the Year category, won by Greater Govanhill Community Magazine.
The Irish Times won Regional Daily Newspaper of the Year.
The Financial Times won National Newspaper of the Year and International Newspaper of the Year, while The Sunday Telegraph won Sunday Newspaper of the Year.
