It was a day or mourning, but also a celebration of a remarkable life.

The funeral of Professor Stephen Hawking was held at Great St Mary’s, the University of Cambridge church, on Saturday March 31, and was attended by about 500 people.

Stars including Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Dara O’Briain, Charlotte Hawkins and Brian May were among the celebrities inside the church.

A huge crowd gathered to pay their respects, breaking into spontaneous applause at one point.

Our photographer captured unique images from Gonville & Caius College, where Prof Hawking was a fellow for 52 years.

Prof Hawking, who was given two years to live when diagnosed with motor neurone disease at 21, died at the age of 76 at his home in Cambridge on March 14.

His theories on black holes, Hawking radiation, the multiverse and singularities have been hugely influential.

Prof Hawking also had an ability to inspire, with his book A Brief History of Time selling 10 million copies.
