Ever Resource wins ‘Global StartUp of the Year’ at the UK StartUp Awards 2024

Ever Resource is celebrating winning the ‘Global StartUp of the Year’ at the UK StartUp Awards 2024 last week.

Co-founders Miles Freeman and CEO Athan Fox started the battery upcycling firm in 2019 with a mission to take old batteries and “introduce new features in the material that re-train the molecules and allow them to do things that they couldn’t do originally”.

Dr Fox said: “This recognition means the world to us. It validates our decision to scale up our technology and business through a strategic approach – acquiring companies both upstream and downstream, and enhancing our value chain with materials science and our unique intellectual property.”

Ever Resource’s upcycling process currently involves lead-acid batteries, with zinc battery and lithium battery recycling to follow.

“By upcycling we mean that we recycle a material but make it better than the original!” says Athan. “How is this possible? To put it in simple terms – by recycling we introduce new features in the material that re-train the molecules and allow them to do things that they couldn’t do originally… Yes, this means that we can make materials by recycling which are better than primary industry / mined materials.”

Dr Fox co-invented the IP with Professor Vasant Kumar (Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy; Trinity Hall College) and team.

In 2022, Dr David Batstone and Ted Swindells, both seasoned US-based executives with experience in scaling up businesses, public companies and charities., joined.

“We went on to acquire a battery company in Liquidation, based in Bologna, Italy,” continued Dr Fox, “and then we acquired a Luxembourg company which has two operating sites in Sweden. This company was co-founded by two former Hydrovolt executives - Hydrovolt being a joint venture of Northvolt - who have since joined our team.
