Cambridge Maths School offers a fresh perspective on sixth-form education in East Anglia
Following the popularity of two extremely successful open events at the University of Cambridge maths department in June, Cambridge Maths School has planned an additional open evening in October – places are available to book on the website.
Prospective students and parents can find out more about the stimulating curriculum which provides students with a rich experience that goes well beyond the A-level curriculum.
There will be more information about how we will develop students’ academic literacy, their independent learning and study skills and much more.
The founding headteacher will be on hand to deliver the keynote presentation as well as answer any of your questions. If you can’t attend the October date, email us at hello@cms.tela.org.uk and we can arrange to meet to answer your questions.
Clare Hargraves, headteacher, said: “Mathematics opens up opportunities both in academia as well as across a breadth of careers ranging from meteorology to games designer, biomedical research scientist to sports statistician. It is a fascinating subject that both challenges and rewards.
“The opportunity to work in a community of mathematicians who will develop both how they think mathematically as well as their ability to argue clearly and concisely as they solve problems is a privilege and I am so looking forward to receiving the applications from the young people who share this passion and will apply to study at the Cambridge Maths School.”
Our community
We have continued to build our staff body and are delighted to introduce Jack Rudin who joins us as director of strategy and development.
Our school
Contractors are starting work to install the bespoke science labs in our Mill Road home. Our unique curriculum will offer a choice of physics, chemistry, biology and computer science all of which will be catered for in brand new spaces.
Until recently, a language school occupied the building so the classrooms are already in existence: we are working to fully modernise them and ensure the learning environment is excellent.
Outreach
The CMS Outreach programme continues to expand.
In June we ran two highly successful Eureka days.
The Eureka programme consisted of two full days of stimulating activities for students in Year 9 and 10 with the following aims:
- Enrich mathematical experiences
- Engage students using mathematics beyond the curriculum
- To develop confidence when dealing with maths problems
- To develop tenacity when dealing with maths problems
- Encourage students to think like mathematicians and identify as mathematicians.
The days were exceptionally popular and oversubscribed – meaning that 350 students from 11 schools across the Eastern region were able to attend. These were free to schools who only had to arrange their own transport and our ticket holders included schools as far apart as Felixstowe and Letchworth.
Students engaged in a variety of activities provided by academics from Cambridge University as well as our own colleagues. Participating schools, and those who were unable to secure tickets, are keen for us to repeat these events next academic year.
Applications open very soon!
Students applying from within the Cambridgeshire region will be able to apply through the CAP process from October this year. Students from out of area can also apply directly through our website.
