Wines for autumn - and delectable events for your diary
In a new monthly column from Market House, the dining and meeting space in central Cambridge, general manager Bill Brogan uncorks some autumnal delights and looks ahead to special events.
As we enter the autumn months, I will discuss some of the new wines by the glass that we are featuring in the wine bar here at Market House.
We do have six new wines, three whites and three reds. We have just held a sell-out wine tasting on the wines.
The wines are picked to follow our ethos, of being creative, inventive and have sustainable values and are attractively priced.
A couple of the standout wines that feature are the Riesling from Eden Valley, South Australia, and Greco Di Tufo, from Southern Italy, which has wonderful mineral elements - very distinctive, not often seen.
But the standout wine is the Zweigelt Niederosterrich from Austria. The grape is a crossing of two other grapes developed in the 1920s. It is now the most widely planted grape variety in Austria. It was the favourite when we held the tasting, beating the Nebbiolo from Piedmont.
The Zweigelt has lots of berry/cherry fruit, and goes well with lots of autumn foods, such as light game, mushrooms, nuts and spices. It had such lovely aromas.
What’s coming up?
We have our artisan cheese tasting with the Cambridge Cheese Shop on November 10, a coffee workshop on November 11 and Christmas wine tasting on November 18 in the wine bar, followed by a Pol Roger Champagne dinner on November 28, with James Simpson MW leading us through some great Champagnes and dinner skilfully prepared and served by our chefs and front of house team.
Plus, there will be two Christmas cookery classes in November.
All these events are available to be booked.
On the theme of sustainability, we are also taking part in Food for the Planet Festival organised by Cambridge Sustainable Food, serving two sustainable dishes on our menus - one in the casual dining area and one in the main restaurant. Until next time..
