33-year-old jailed after unprovoked attack in Cambridge left victim needing surgery
A 33-year-old has been jailed after he beat up a man who gave him a can of alcohol, leaving him with a fractured shoulder.
Thomas Nash, of no known address, was sitting in a shop doorway in Cambridge city centre on May 10, 2020, when the victim handed him the drink.
When he wouldn’t hand over another, Nash became agitated and threatening. He pushed the man to the ground and kicked his rucksack into the road.
Passers-by called police and tried to intervene as Nash attacked the victim on the ground.
Officers arrived and arrested Nash, who admitted the assault during interview.
The victim was taken to hospital, where he was found to have a fractured, dislocated shoulder, which required surgery, as well as other injuries including cuts and bruises.
Nash pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm without intent and was sentenced to one year in prison at Cambridge Crown Court last Thursday (January 27).
Det Con Sarah Longbottom, who investigated, said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack which left a man with serious injuries requiring surgery. These injuries have had a massive impact on his life and the attack has left him shaken.
“Nash was clearly incapable of controlling his anger and I am glad we have secured justice for the victim today.”
