600 hampers packed for Cambridge families facing food poverty this Christmas

Seasonal vegetables for more than 600 Cambridge families facing food insecurity this winter were packed ahead of Christmas.

The mayor of Cambridge, Cllr Jenny Gawthrope Wood, and fellow city councillors Rachel Wade and Mairéad Healy joined Cambridge Sustainable Food (CSF) for the packing at Byron House on Cambridge Science Park Road on Tuesday, December 19.

Now in its fourth year, CSF, Cambridge City Council and Cambridge City Foodbank are again working together to provide Christmas hampers.

Cllr Gawthrope Wood said: “No-one should have to go without at Christmas. I am delighted to be able to support Cambridge Sustainable Food, and that the council has been able to support CSF and Cambridge City Foodbank in the hamper appeal again this year, making sure that local families receive the food they need over the festive season as well as a toy or gift for under the tree.

“Having now run for four years, the Cambridge Christmas hamper project has supported thousands of Cambridge families who are struggling to make ends meet.”

CSF needs to raise funds to continue supporting the city’s community food hubs.
