70 people sleep out in -2C temperatures at Cambridge SleepOut for LandAid

The temperature plummeted to about -2C as 70 people slept outside in Cambridge in a stark reminder of what those facing homelessness experience.

The Cambridge SleepOut took place at Cambridge University Rugby Club and raised thousands for LandAid. The proceeds will help the property industry charity support a variety of projects supporting young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness across the UK.

The organisers thanked the rugby club and Cantab Catering for feeding those taking part, who included seven members of the regional LandAid Board.

About 45 per cent of the team from Howard Group joined in, raising £4,986 from donations to date.

CEO Nicholas Bewes said: “For the eight of us from Howard Group it was just a single night of extreme cold and limited sleep. For many young people, this is a daily reality and sadly a way of life having nowhere to call home.

“Despite our short-lived discomfort, we were all spurred on by the generosity of those who supported us. The money raised will help to make a real difference to the lives of the many young people in our communities who do not enjoy many of the basic comforts that we can so easily take for granted. Thank you to all those who have supported so generously.”

Nationally, the total raised from 2025 LandAid Sleepout events is £591,653.
