A day in the life of… Lola Lo VIP hostess Lara Natusch

Ahead of the Cambridge BID and Cambridge Independent job fair on Tuesday, June 20, we’re speaking to people in a number of roles around the city.

This week, we spoke to Lara Natusch, 20, VIP hostess at Lola Lo.

Describe your role for us and what you do on a typical day.

My main role working at the club is managing the VIP tables and hosting at the door. This includes taking payments, sorting pre-orders and making sure waitress service is running seamlessly. Our main aim is to provide a super memorable, fun experience for all our customers. I also help run some of our socials, trying to further interaction with our customers. This aspect of the job is probably my favourite part as marketing is something that really interests me.

When did you join?

I joined the club in September 2021 as a promoter.

How did you get to where you are now?

From starting work at the club as a promoter, I wanted to get more involved. I moved from being a promoter to the bar and then to being a waitress, and now I am the head hostess.

What do you love about what you do?

Making people happy. I love looking after hen parties and making sure they a super special night. Just making an environment that is enjoyable for the staff and the customers.

Tell us about the toughest part of your job - and the most fun.

The toughest part has to be adapting to any issues that occur on the night. Plans often change so when you are running a shift you need to be flexible and work around the problem. That is probably the toughest part, and also working at nights can sometimes be tiring. The most fun part is probably just working with the team at Lola’s. There is a proper family atmosphere at Lola’s and the staff always have a good laugh.

Do you remember how you felt on your first day?

I was nervous as the venue felt huge, but very quickly I felt comfortable and at home there.

What advice would you give to someone looking to work in your industry?

Just go for it! Hospitality is definitely a hard and fast-paced industry, but it is also a lot of fun with lots of opportunities.

What’s great about working in Cambridge?

Cambridge is lovely to work in as the hospitality industry is very close with lots of connections, not only within Lola’s but other venues.

What do you aim to do in the future to further your career?

I am training to be a midwife currently, but from working at Lola’s I have learnt that I enjoy marketing and management and one day they are definitely something I want to explore. For the moment, I think I plan to continue training to be a midwife and take lots of the transferable skills from Lola’s into my midwifery training.
