A day in the life of... The Gonville Hotel’s guest relations manager Leah Jelleyman
Ahead of the Cambridge BID and Cambridge Independent job fair on Tuesday, June 20, we’re speaking to people in a number of roles around the city.
This week, we spoke to Leah Jelleyman, 32, guest relations manager at The Gonville Hotel in Cambridge.
Describe your role for us and what you do on a typical day.
No day is typical! I support the day-to-day running of the hotel in any area needed, whether it be our food & beverage, reception or housekeeping departments, with a particular focus on making sure every guest has the best experience possible.
When did you join?
I joined in May 2023.
How did you get to where you are now?
I have worked in many different businesses in lots of relevant roles. For example, as a waitress, commis chef, housekeeping attendant and even reception manager. In fact, I was the reception manager at The Gonville Hotel five years ago and decided to come back!
What do you love about what you do?
My role varies every day which is what I really love about it. My key area of focus is the customer experience, which gives me the opportunity to be creative in making guests’ stays as memorable and special as possible. I really enjoy meeting people from all walks of life, both our guests and in the hotel team.
Tell us about the toughest part of your job - and the most fun.
I think the toughest part is when you have a lot happening all at once and you need to make quick decisions. The best and most fun part is the amazing, funny and hard-working team I have the privilege of facing all these challenges with.
Do you remember how you felt on your first day?
I remember being nervous as it was a new role, but very happy to be back and see some familiar faces.
What advice would you give to someone looking to work in your industry?
If you love people and want a job where you need to think on your feet and are never bored, then hospitality is for you.
What’s great about working in Cambridge?
Cambridge is a wonderful city full of history. But it also has such a forward-thinking and progressive mindset, being an international hub of research and learning. There really is something for everyone.
What do you aim to do in the future to further your career?
I plan to continue to learn from my team and my managers and possibly go further in hotel management one day.
