Test Match Special veteran delights crowd at match raising funds for Royal Anglian Regiment Benevolent charity.
Fenner’s, Cambridge University’s cricket ground, hosted a T20 charity cricket match, sponsored by Catherine Jones of Cambridge, between a Cambridge University President’s XI and a Royal Anglian Regiment XI.
Commentating on the match on Sunday, July 8 in his own inimitable style was Henry Blofeld, who retired from the BBC’s Test Match Special in 2017.
His special guest was former Pakistan and Cambridge University cricketer, Majid Khan.
The match was won by the Cambridge University team – featuring former England rugby international Rob Andrew in its ranks – who racked up 182 for 4, with the Royal Anglian Regiment managing 114 for 9 in reply.
The game was marking the centenary of the end of the First World War and also raised funds for the Royal Anglian Regiment Benevolent charity.
Organiser Vanessa Burkitt, owner of Catherine Jones of Cambridge, said: “We are massively grateful to all who played and all who came.
“Even the High Sheriff of Cambridge, Dr Andrew Harter, Lily Bacon, deputy lieutenant, and the mayor of Cambridge, Nigel Gawthrope, beat a path to the gates of the ground.
“And, to add to the fun, we raised £10k for the charity.”
