It’s a century since the end of the First World War and New Cambridge Singers are remembering the Armistice with the soaringly beautiful Duruflé Requiem

New Cambridge Singers’ (NCS) begin their 2018/19 season on a reflective but impassioned note marking the 100th anniversary of the Armistice with a performance of Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem. As a choir that regularly brings its music to towns and villages surrounding Cambridge, NCS will be making their first visit to St George’s Church in Littleport on the eve of the anniversary itself.

Choir Director Graham Walker commented, “Duruflé’s longest and most substantial work was completed in 1947, soon after the end of the Second World War. The music of the Requiem is inspired by the chants from the Gregorian Mass for the Dead, and what better occasion to perform this than to commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War.

“This magnificent and moving work is paired with other shorter works, which use plainsong chants as their inspiration, by composers from Rachmaninov to the contemporary British composer David Nunn.

“The same concert programme will be performed in central Cambridge at the Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs on Saturday 17 November 2018. It’s wonderful to return to this beautiful venue for the third year in a row.”
