A10 at Foxton to close for seven days this Christmas for level crossing work

Drivers are reminded that the A10 at Foxton will be closed for seven days over Christmas to allow for works to the level crossing.

The road closure will be in place from 10pm on Tuesday, 24 December until 6am on Wednesday, 1 January.

There will be a signposted diversion for motorists travelling on the A10 between Royston and Cambridge while Foxton level crossing is closed.

The diversion route will direct drivers onto the A505 between Royston and Duxford and the A1301 between Duxford and Trumpington.

During the closure, engineers will be installing a new, heavy-duty road deck at Foxton level crossing. The pedestrian crossing decks are being replaced at the same time. Network Rail will be running a fully-accessible minibus for pedestrians who want to cross the railway.

Teams will also be replacing the rails through the level crossing, as well as 615 metres of track and four sets of points in the area.

Intensive road and rail use means that the current level crossing and the nearby track is in poor condition, with train services having to be slowed down because of speed restrictions to keep everyone safe. The work over Christmas will minimise delays for rail passengers and keep drivers moving by reducing the need for road closures in future.

Simon Milburn, infrastructure director for Network Rail Anglia, said: “We’re really sorry for the disruption, but we need extended access to the level crossing to get this vital job done, and the roads and railways are typically quieter in the period between Christmas and new year. Once installed, the new level crossing decks and track will serve motorists, pedestrians and rail passengers for many years to come.”

The works near Foxton, along with the continuing construction of Cambridge South station and the latest stage of a major signalling upgrade, mean that there will be changes to rail services in the area for up to 12 days over Christmas.

The A10 is also planned to be closed at Foxton at the following times:

Thursday, 2 January from 00:01 to 06:00

Friday, 3 January from 00:01 to 06:00

Sunday, 5 January from 00:01 to 06:00

Saturday, 11 January at 02:00 to Sunday, 12 January at 02:00

Saturday, 15 February at 02:00 to Sunday, 16 February at 02:00
