The algorithmic R&D consultancy based in Cambridge specialises in developing innovative solvers for complex mathematical optimisation problems. By leveraging a data-driven approach and expertise in advanced computational techniques, 4colors partners with industry leaders worldwide to deliver impactful solutions. From startups and government agencies to Fortune 500 companies, 4colors Research applies its academic and industry expertise to tackle the most challenging computational problems, including supply chain efficiency, cost optimisation, and sustainability.

“Our solver is designed to address supply chain problems at scale today, using classical computing, while being fully adaptable to leverage quantum advancements in the future,” said Dr Kaminski, founder and CEO of 4colors Research.

4colors’ innovative solution to a manufacturing supply chain optimisation challenge faced by industry giants like Airbus and BMW was selected in June as one of three finalists in the Quantum-Powered Logistics track of the Airbus-BMW Quantum Computing Challenge.

The challenge, called The Quantum Mobility Quest, is an international competition organised by Airbus and BMW Group, with participation from Amazon Web Services and The Quantum Insider. This year’s event attracted more than 420 teams, with more than 100 submissions competing across five distinct tracks.

In total, 15 finalists across five competition tracks were selected, comprising nine companies and six universities or RTOs. Notably, 4colors Research was the sole finalist from the UK.

All the finalists collaborated closely with Airbus and BMW experts to develop tailored solutions addressing specific business requirements.

“Optimising large-scale supply chain problems is one of the most complex computational challenges, akin to solving massive, multidimensional Sudoku puzzles,” said Dr Kaminski. “This project highlights the potential of quantum computing to address these challenges and create real-world impact.

“Collaborating with Airbus and BMW was an exceptional opportunity to demonstrate how advanced algorithms can help minimise costs and reduce the environmental footprint of large-scale operations.”

Airbus is a global leader in aerospace, renowned for its cutting-edge aircraft and defence systems, while the BMW Group, encompassing brands like BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce, is a pioneer in sustainable automotive manufacturing and mobility solutions.

The award was presented at the Q2B 2024 Silicon Valley conference held in Santa Clara, Cailfornia, in mid-December.
