All the roads in Cambridge where 20mph limits are proposed

Residents are being invited to have their say on plans to introduce 20mph speed limits on almost 40 roads in Cambridge.

Cambridgeshire County Council has put forward the proposed restrictions in a bid to cut pollution and make roads safer as part of its Transforming Cities programme.

Earlier this year, speed reduction measures were introduced in some other parts of the county, including Ely and Huntingdon.

The council said it hoped safer streets with lower speed limits would make residents more confident to walk, cycle and use other non-motorised transport.

Cllr Alex Beckett (Lib Dem, Queen Edith’s), chair of the highways and transport committee, said cutting speed limits from 30mph to 20mph can reduce the chance of severe or fatal injuries from collisions by 60 per cent and cut pollution by 30 per cent.

He said: “Nearly 20 years ago Cambridge city introduced its first 20mph zones.

“They’ve been widely seen as successful and now we’re asking residents if they want to expand the number of 20mph streets within the city.

“We now want to hear from the public. What do you think of the proposals? Do we have the right streets included? Are the boundaries in the best places?

“These are some of the things we really want to hear from all those who live, work or study in the city. I would encourage everyone to respond so that we can listen to the feedback, which will help shape our future proposals to make roads and footways safer for all users.”

A survey on the Consult Cambridgeshire website, seeking the public’s views about the proposal, is now open and will close on 25 September.

Leaflets are also being sent to households in Cambridge and are available at community centres and libraries in the area.
