angli-EAR Hearing’s Kirstie volunteers to offer vital ear health education in rural India
A hearing care assistant at angli-EAR Hearing in Great Shelford has returned from a life-changing trip to northern India where she volunteered her time and skills in the rural Himalayan village of Sainji.
As part of her apprenticeship with Anglia Ruskin University, Kirstie Eley joined a small team of volunteers to support communities with limited access to healthcare. With no electricity in some areas and little formal medical provision, audiology treatment was not possible – but ear health education proved essential.
“Prevention was key,” said Kirstie, who was the only audiologically-trained member of the team. “I gave talks on ear infections, answered questions from villagers, and helped raise awareness about how untreated issues can impact everyday life.”
One of her most memorable moments came while meeting the Van Gujjars – a nomadic community of buffalo herders – where she was able to offer guidance in an area where audiology knowledge had never previously reached.
“They were so welcoming and engaged,” said Kirstie. “It felt like we were making a real difference.”
The trip was also a cultural exchange. From drying chillies in the sun to spontaneous wedding invitations and endless cups of chai, Kirstie was welcomed with open arms: “By the end of my time there, I felt part of the community.”
The experience has left a lasting impression on Kirstie – and on those she helped.
“We couldn’t leave equipment due to lack of follow-up care,” she explained, “but I hope the knowledge we shared will help prevent infections and long-term problems in the future.”
Back in Cambridgeshire, Kirstie is already thinking about what to do next.
She said: “This trip reminded me how lucky we are to have healthcare here. It’s made me want to do more – both locally and abroad.”
angli-EAR Hearing is proud to support Kirstie’s journey and the lasting impact she’s made. To help fund ongoing support for the communities she visited, donations can be made via her JustGiving page at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/kirstie-eley.
