“We moved in 2004, when it was very much a ‘doer-upper’,” said the woman of the house, a mother of one child who has now left home. “So pretty much everything in the house, bar the parquet floor in the living room, has actually been changed.

“We did our first extension as soon as we moved in, across the back, creating a bigger living room and a kitchen/diner, and then we did another one in 2013, which grew the house again by a third.

“It gave us a much bigger kitchen, a utility room, a bigger garage and then upstairs a fantastic master bedroom with a vaulted ceiling, Velux windows, a little dressing area and an en-suite.”

Asked whether this is their first project of this nature, the man of the house – a former student at the University of Cambridge – replied: “To this degree, yes.”

His wife added: “We’d both done up houses before separately, but this is our first big project together.”

Why have the couple decided to move? “For jobs, really,” said the female owner, originally from Kent. “We’re up for a new project without a doubt, but what it will be we’re not sure yet.”

Discussing standout features among the many changes made, her husband said:

“The vaulted bedroom is just an amazing space. We’ve programmed the Velux window blinds to open at sunrise, so you wake up to the sun coming up and the light coming into the room.

“I think the other [standout feature] is the dining/kitchen area. It’s a lovely place to have Christmases and family occasions.”

The lady of the house noted: “It’s a great socialising space because it flows into the outside. It’s great for family and friends, dinner parties, as well as relaxing in – we spend a lot of time there.”

Although their child has left home, the couple are not looking to downsize.

“We’re looking for a new challenge,” said the man of the house, “just looking to move out of Cambridge itself.

“We both have jobs in Cambridge, but we’re moving out towards the west of the city, to Coton, St Neots, that sort of area.”

The couple readily admit that they will miss what has been a beautiful family home, the man of the house concluding: “We’ve always said that we would love to pick the house up and move it with us.”
