Become the next official charity of Cambridge's Chariots of Fire race
This year’s official charity Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust continues to raise much needed funds to give the region its first dedicated children’s ambulance service but still needs more cash to help obtain a second vehicle.
Cambridgeshire’s generosity has managed so far to raise over £65,000 which is enough to fully kit out one children’s ambulance.
However, with more money due from the Chariots of Fire race, they hope to raise £108,000 for a second ambulance that would enable Addenbrooke’s Hospital to always have one available on call to respond to emergencies.
If you would like to contribute and help ACT raise hit their target of £108,000 please visit their Just Giving page at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/chariots2019 and donate by December 20.
Addenbrooke's Hospital admits approximately 3,500 children every year. If a child has a serious illness or needs emergency treatment then they will need transporting in an ambulance. However, while adults and newborn babies, who need intensive care treatment are blue-lighted by dedicated, specialist ambulance services, there is currently no such ambulance service in the East of England specifically for critically ill children.
Children have significantly different needs to newborns and adults and are best served by a dedicated children’s ambulance.
Hundreds of children requiring urgent transportation to an ICU have to rely on a London-based service to transport them. This can cause delays in treatment and anxiety for worried parents or carers. It can also result in delayed transfers back to their local hospital for their final stages of recovery, increasing the time they’re separated from friends and family.
The 2019 Chariots of Fire, organised by Hewitson's Charitable Trust has partnered with Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust (ACT). With your sponsorship, we need to raise funds for an Emergency Children's Ambulance that will benefit on average 1,700 children a year. Will you help us?
Chariots of Fire, organised and managed by Hewitsons Charitable Trust, took place on Sunday, September 22,and is one of Cambridgeshires largest annual charity events.
The charity race follows in the heroic footsteps of the famous film Chariots of Fire, telling the story of Harold Abrahams, a Cambridge runner, and his bid to win a gold medal in the 1924 Olympics.
It includes the iconic scene of the race around Trinity College Great Court. Teams of six each run a 1.7 miles course in relay format.
Donations for vital children’s ambulance services are not the only item Chariots of Fire is hoping to raise, applications for charities wishing to be the next official charity for Chariots of Fire are now open too.
The race, which is expected to take place on Sunday, September 20, next year, will continue the Chariots of Fire tradition of raising funds for a selected official charity.
