Blue Badge and child parking bays will be relocated in Grand Arcade car park for four weeks

By Ben Comber

Some 33 blue badge parking spaces will be temporarily relocated to level minus one with 12 parent and child parking spaces moving to level four.

Customers can also park at the following car parks, which have dedicated blue badge and parent and children parking:

Grafton East – 46 blue badge and 20 parent and child bays;

Grafton West – Six blue badge and four parent and child bays;

Queen Anne Terrace – 21 blue badge and 26 parent and child bays;

Park Street - Seven blue badge bays.

Blue Badge and parent and child car parking bays will be temporarily relocated within the Grand Arcade multi-storey car park from Monday 10 July for a four week period while essential improvement works are carried out.

The works will take place throughout level two of the car park including on the upper level where the blue badge and parent and child spaces are located.

Improvements will include the removal of the existing floor surface, preparation and laying of a new floor, painting the walls and the ceiling, remarking of parking bays and installation of directional signage.

The improvements are part of a £1.2m investment programme by the council in its multi-storey car parks.

Sean Cleary, Commercial Operations Manager, said: “We regret the inevitable inconvenience this causes to some customers, but the work is essential in order to maintain the high level of service that our customers expect.

“While the work takes place the blue badge and parent and child parking bays located throughout level two on the upper level of the car park will be out of commission. Vehicles will still be able to drive through this area to gain access to parking spaces above.

“Temporary parking for blue badge holders will be on level minus one in the lower part of the car park. This has level access to three payment machines and has lift access via the Shopmobility parking area to the first floor of the Grand Arcade shopping centre.

“It is also in close proximity to the parking and Shopmobility customer services office in the event that assistance is required. There will be signage in place to help assist drivers find their way to the allocated blue badge parking area.

He added: “We have moved parent and child parking to level four of the upper car park for the duration of the work. We have allocated a set of 12 standard parking bays near the south end lift to give parents a parking area that is accessible.

“Unfortunately due to the temporary nature of this arrangement and the new floor coating we are unable to mark these bays to match the width of the permanent bays.”

At the Grand Arcade car park, which has not had any major refurbishment works since it opened in 2007, a number of improvements are taking place including a completely new protective deck coating throughout the upper car park, to keep rainwater out and to protect the building structure.

Drainage systems are being improved or repaired to stop pooling water, to reduce the risk of flooding and the potential need to close areas of the car park. Remarking and re-lining of all traffic routes and parking bays will also be completed.
