Buses will not return to Histon Road in Cambridge until roadworks end

Stagecoach East have stopped running buses on Histon Road as they claim the services keep being disrupted by roadworks.

The road had been closed for months during a project by the Greater Cambridge Partnership to provide better bus, walking and cycling facilities for those travelling into Cambridge. The road was reopened to traffic at the end of September. However, some parts of the project were not finished.

Responding on Twitter to queries about when normal bus services would resume, Stagecoach East said: “Due to the roadworks that keep appearing at a moment(’s) notice, which then means a new diversion, we made the decision to leave as it was until the finish.”

A spokesperson from Stagecoach East said: “Due to on-going roadworks on Histon Road to complete the Highways project, we have had to temporarily divert services on this route. There have been frequent closures of Histon Road whilst the work is completed, and we've been working closely and in consultation with the local authorities throughout the road improvement project to minimise disruption and confusion to our passengers. The Citi 8 service will return to its normal route via Histon Road from 24 Sunday October 2021. We would like to apologise to our passengers for any inconvenience this may cause in the interim."

A Greater Cambridge partnership spokesperson said: “Some overnight closures have been necessary so that we could carry out the remaining work safely – we apologise for any inconvenience. The new dedicated bus lane, floating bus stops, additional and wider cycle lanes along with a raft of safety improvements that have been created by the GCP aim to encourage more people to walk, cycle or take the bus along Histon Road to cut congestion and improve air quality.”

The overnight closure dates were published on the GCP’s social media channels, they said.
