How well will they get on against the quizmasters?

Cambridge covers band The Melodybeats will be appearing on the BBC 2 quiz show Eggheads.

The programme will be shown on Friday (January 26) at 6pm.

The band have been active on the Cambridge music scene since the 1960s and their current line up consists of Keith Day (lead guitar), Dick Powell (guitar and keyboards), Glenn Newman (bass) and Phil Law (drums).

Glenn was unable to attend the filming for family reasons and was replaced by their stand-in drummer, Gary Dear.

Keith, the band’s most recent member who’s been with them for about six years, told the Cambridge Independent: “The Melodybeats have been around for a long time, and in recent years we’ve taken to doing something different every year. Last year our leader said he was going to put us in for Eggheads and we thought he was joking.

“The next thing we knew, we were contacted by the production company and got picked.”

Keith added: “It was recorded in Glasgow. The production company treated us very well and the Eggheads themselves were very friendly.

“We were competitive but they made us feel at ease.”
