Sixteen seats were contested across14 wards.

The new constitution of the council is:

  • Labour: 26 (+1)
  • Liberal Democrats: 15 (+2)
  • Independent: 1
  • Greens: 0 (-1)

The Greens will take heart though that they did gain votes in many wards, often from Labour, despite limited campaign activity.

Afterwards. Labour leader Cllr Lewis Herbert told voters: "We will tackle inequality, act on climate change and biodiversity, build council homes and protect your key services."

The Liberal Democrats had a reasonably positive night, while the sole independent candidate, Sam Davies, came second in Queen Edith's ward.

The Tories and UKIP had nights to forget.

Two seats had been vacant prior before the election, following the death of the mayor, Nigel Gawthrope, and resignation of Donald Adey, following his move to Scotland.

There was also a by-election in the Trumpington division of Cambridgeshire County Council, follow Cllr Adey's resignation there. It was won by Barbara Ashwood for the Liberal Democrats, Donald Adey's original party before a falling out that led to him leaving the party amid controversy for continuing to claim allowances while being absent from the area.

Elsewhere in the county, the Tories lost control in Peterborough.

East Cambridgeshire District Council results are being counted on Friday morning. There were no district council elections in South Cambridgeshire.
