Cambridge’s annual fireworks display is set to go ahead once again on Midsummer Common on Saturday, November 4.

The event, which is sponsored again this year by Illumina and organised by Cambridge City Council, is one of the largest free displays in the region.

The fireworks display will start at 7pm and has been designed by multi award-winning company, Pains Fireworks.

Cllr Mairéad Healy, executive councillor for communities at Cambridge City Council, said: “Cambridge’s fireworks display is such a well-loved tradition in the city and a great way for people to enjoy fireworks in a safe and community friendly way. For decades, it’s always been a night full of excitement and anticipation, when families and friends converge in their thousands on historic Midsummer Common to enjoy the dazzling colours and spectacle of this magical fireworks display.

“This is one of the city’s most important community events, providing a wonderful shared experience for all and we are immensely grateful to headline sponsor Illumina for their generous sponsorship and invaluable support once again this year. Also, to the many other local businesses and organisations whose contributions help make it happen.”

Creating the display is Pains Fireworks. Established in 1862 they are the oldest fireworks display company in the UK. Tom Cranmer from Pains said: “We’re more excited than ever to return to Cambridge for this year’s celebrations as we light up the skies with a variety of beautiful colours and effects.

“We’ve been incredibly busy in recent months making our day-to-day operations as green as possible as we work to reduce emissions.”

Mark Robinson, vice president of Illumina, said: “Cambridge’s free fireworks is set to be a brilliant night. We are really pleased to be supporting such an important event for our Cambridge community. Fireworks night brings much anticipation and excitement and is always such a memorable occasion.

“Illumina is proud to be lead sponsor, and to join forces with other Cambridge businesses to support the Cambridge Fireworks event again in 2023.This display is one of the last remaining free public events on this scale in the region. We encourage everyone who attends to show their appreciation by helping to build on the support of local businesses. If attendees would like to bring any loose change to donate on the night it is always welcome, as every contribution large or small helps to keep this wonderful event free for the public in future years.”

Tens of thousands of people are anticipated, so the council has urged people to allow plenty of time for their journey, to arrive early and wherever possible walk, cycle, or use public transport. Additional Park & Ride services will be available for the evening. The display begins at 7pm. For full details go to cambridgelive.org.uk/city-events/fireworks-night.
