Cambridge Gin Laboratory opens its doors again following full refurbishment
The award-winning establishment on Green Street recently reopened to the public, allowing the re-styled interiors and new experiential, gin-based cocktails to be enjoyed for the first time
On Friday, April 27, a private function was held for press, friends and foodies. The gin-lover’s paradise – which also has a distillery in Grantchester – then opened to the public the following day.
The lab closed on April 1 and the complete transformation that has taken place in less than a month is truly remarkable. What was previously a classroom on the ground floor is now a laboratory, while said room for learning – where visitors can blend their own gin and learn about the popular spirit – is now on the first floor.
There is also a private hire room, for up to 16 people, on the second floor.
William Lowe, who runs the firm with his wife Lucy, told the Cambridge Independent: “It reminds me of when we started in the first place, which is that everyone thought that the status quo was good enough, why are you going to change something that always works?
“And here we are now, seven years in, having been awarded three consecutive times the most innovative distillery in the world.”
William and Lucy moved to the premises on Green Street in September, 2017. “We were getting great feedback, great bookings through,” said William, “and so we closed it for a month, which seemed counter-intuitive – but I think you’ll agree when you look around that what we’ve done now is absolutely next-level stuff.
“We’re trying to redefine spirits retail, so you’re not just walking in and buying things off the shelf; you can come in and make gin to your own taste with one of our experts.”
