Cambridge man dies after his car hits lorry parked in A14 layby near Newmarket
A Cambridge man has died following a collision between his car and an articulated lorry parked in a layby on the A14.
The man, in his 60s, died at the scene between junctions 37 for Newmarket and 36 for the A11 on Sunday (13 October).
Police, who are appealing for witnesses, were called at about 5.15pm with reports that a silver Skoda Fabia had crashed into a Volvo HGV articulated lorry parked in a lay-by near Swaffham Bulbeck.
The HGV driver suffered minor injuries.
The A14 was closed westbound between the two junctions into the night following the crash so that Cambridgeshire police could carry out investigations.
At about 6.25pm the decision was made to close the eastbound carriageway as well between junction 35 and junction 37, which resulted in the A11 northbound being closed from the A1304 Six Mile Bottom, until specialist resources required by the emergency services arrived at the scene.
These arrived at 7.15pm and both the A14 eastbound and A11 northbound were reopened.
The East of England Ambulance Service, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and the East Anglian Air Ambulance attended the scene, while National Highways traffic officers helped with emergency traffic management.
A diversion was put in place and traffic was eventually turned and released from the rear of the queue or escorted slowly past the scene in lane three.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw the vehicles in the moments leading up to the incident.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage should report it through the force website using the reference Op Carter or call 101.
