John Beresford is raising money for Jimmy's Night Shelter

A Cambridge man is cycling the 874 miles (1,407km) from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for the homeless in the city – but will achieve it without leaving the confines of the gym.

John Beresford, South Cambs Labour Party chairman, is raising money for Jimmy’s Night Shelter in Cambridge after becoming concerned about the rising numbers of homeless people on the city’s streets.

Mr Beresford, 70, has already raised £2,700 out a £10,000 target.

He said: “I was walking through Cambridge and got increasingly depressed by the number of homeless people.

“I thought would raise some money for Jimmy’s Night Shelter.

“At least you stay warm inside a gym. I have been going to the Hills Road tennis and sports centre gym six days out of seven.”
