The award reconfirmed the importance for sustainable design within the industry.

The multi-denominational mosque gives Muslim traditions a contemporary context. The use of timber throughout underlines the project’s overall ambition to be as carbon-neutral as possible – both in its fabric and operation.

The mosque is designed to be naturally lit throughout the day and naturally ventilated, even at peak occupancy, while using a combination of green technologies, including rainwater harvesting, air source heat pumps and photovoltaics to minimise its carbon footprint.

The AJ Architecture Awards recognises excellence in UK architecture across a range of categories, from school and housing projects to landscaping and leisure. These highly coveted awards are unique to the market, with each shortlisted project visited by a judging panel and published in the Architects' Journal.

The 2019 awards were held at the Exhibition London, Shepherd's Bush, London on November 20.
