Cambridge Post Office at risk of demolition as flats are planned
A petition has been launched after it was revealed that the post office in the city’s Abbey ward could close to make way for flats – and would not be replaced.
Campaigners argue that the Newmarket Road post office is well used by residents and provides important services.
The potential closure is a result of redevelopment plans by the owner of Logic House, the building used by the Cambridge Seminar College, and the property next to it on 149 Newmarket Road, which is where the post office is located.
The plans include demolishing some of the existing buildings and replacing them with 12 residential units and a café.
A decision on the plans has yet to be made, but Post Office Ltd has confirmed that it will not immediately seek to replace it.
As a result, residents will have to travel to the branch in Chesterton High Street, a 17-minute walk, or Vinery Road in Romsey, a 23-minute walk.
Labour city councillor Richard Johnson, who represents Abbey, said: “I am dismayed the Post Office seems to believe that local need would continue to be met if it doesn’t replace the Newmarket Road branch.
“Post offices are a valuable community facility which help provide a sense of place and losing the last one in Abbey will be a real blow to the community here. I urge the Post Office to reconsider their thinking on this matter.”
Campaigners have also pointed out the lack of alternative shops and services in the Abbey community – the area is served by a single Spar shop and a McDonald’s.
Campaigner Nicky Massey said: “It is vital the Post Office knows how important this branch is for local people, many of whom are not able to get online to pay bills or have access to email and may struggle to travel to another post office.
“It’s no use simply looking at a map and calculating the distance from one branch to another, which the Post Office does, as evidence that they can provide a good service for residents.
“Closure of this post office will mean Abbey residents will have to cross the river to Chesterton or go into the city centre. We want the Post Office to recognise the need for a post office located in the ward.”
