Cambridge's Varsity Hotel & Spa celebrates World Gin Day with special afternoon tea
The Varsity Hotel & Spa recently celebrated World Gin Day at SIX, its sixth-floor panoramic bar and brasserie, with a special gin menu
The event, on June 6, boasted a gin tea cocktail list and a variety of sweet and savoury options – from scones served with a gin-infused jam (Pinkster Gin Jam) to smoked salmon, coronation chicken and cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches.
The special sweet treats consisted of lemon, Earl Grey and gin tarts; gin & tonic macarons religieuse; grapefruit & gin choux buns; and raspberry, chocolate and gin layer cake.
There was also a great selection of gin tea cocktails, specially created by SIX’s expert mixologist.
After myself and my colleague, Kath, had finished sampling the wonderful options on offer, while enjoying stunning views of Cambridge, we spoke to general manager Valter Santos, who said that the day had been a great success – previous ‘themed’ afternoon teas have included a ‘ginger’ afternoon tea.
As it stands, the gin afternoon tea was just a one-off event to celebrate World Gin Day, but might it return?
“I hope so,” said Valter, “because it looks great, tastes good, and the staff have trained for it as well.”
Valter says that he and his team are very busy at the moment, due to the May Balls, but says that they will look into doing another gin-infused afternoon tea – or something completely different – once this busy period is over.
