Cambirdge beats Oxford for most top 10s, but falls behind in leading subjects.

The University of Cambridge continues to lead the world in terms of ‘comprehensive educational excellence’. The institute ranks in the top 10 for more subjects than any other institution in the world (36) in the 2017 QS World Univeristy Rankings.

The rankings assess the top universities by subject, with 46 considered, five composite subject areas.

The United Kingdom’s universities remain global leaders, but international higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds say they are facing increasing global competition.

Although the University of Cambridge did not top any of the subject tabled, and in terms of excellence in specific subjects the University of Oxford topped the UK rankings with four number one spots.

Other UK stand-outs include Loughborough University, renowned producer of Olympians and alma mater of Lord Sebastian Coe is ranked the world’s joint-best university for the study of sports-related subjects, and the University of Sussex also topples Harvard University in the Development Studies table.

Harvard University took 15 number-one positions and Massachusetts Institute of Technology took 12.

QS’s Head of Research, Ben Sowter, said: “If last autumn’s overall rankings suggested the winds of winter blowing towards the UK’s higher education system, this year’s subject rankings – enabling observers to drill down into university performance more deeply – provide a less chilling forecast. Though the UK does see its share of overall places decrease, this is a trend observed by institutions in the US, Canada, and Australia, as other nations grow increasingly competitive.

We observe nations in both Eastern Europe and Asia – most notably Russia and China – increasing their overall share. However, the upper echelons of the tables remain dominated by the US and UK, and this seems likely to continue for the foreseeable future.”
