Cambridge Veg Festival tops city wide celebration of all things seasonal

The Cambridge Veg Fest is set to provide lovers of local and seasonal items with the chance to dust off their elasticated trousers.

The festival is a city-wide celebration of local and seasonal vegetables with a focus on bringing the whole community together to grow, cook, eat and enjoy delicious veg.

It is the finale to the city’s year-long ‘Veg Cities’ campaign, and Cambridge Sustainable Food hopes to inspire residents to eat more greens and less meat and dairy in order to reduce the impact on climate change.

With an action-packed week of free events and activities running from July 13-21, there is something for everyone. Residents can join Cambridge Sustainable Food for a town meal and pop-up farmer’s market on July 20 at the Museum of Technology and Othersyde.

People can also book a place at the local celebrity chefs’ allotment cookery tour on July 13, with Tristan Welch from Parker’s Tavern, and Alex Collis, vegan chef and lead city councillor for sustainable food.

For people who want to ensure they dine out on such food, festival organisers have designed a handy map that shows where to fill up on sustainably-sourced produce and support local farmers and businesses, ranging from artisan coffee shops, bakeries, plant-based restaurants and farmers’ markets.

There will also be the opportunity to get the whole family involved in the vegetable treasure hunt, recipe competition or vegetable and fruit creature parade and summer party at the Empty Common Community Garden (July 21). Join them for a bring and share picnic and barbecue.

The mission of the festival is to raise public awareness of the positive environmental and economic impact of choosing locally grown and seasonal vegetables, help people and businesses to buy and cook more veg and help people to grow their own.
