About 100 people were evacuated and there were no casualties.

Around 100 people were evacuated from a flat fire in Cambridge in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue were called at 3.59am to a flat fire in Station Place.

Firefighters were called to a fire in a first floor flat in student accommodation. When crews arrived, the six storey building was evacuated of about 100 people.

Two crews from Cambridge, a crew from Cottenham, Linton, Burwell, and a support vehicle and command support unit from Huntingdon attended.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels and a jet to extinguish the fire by 5am. There were no casualties.

Following a fire investigation, the cause of the fire was determined as accidental. It is believed the fire started in a fan, which then spread to nearby combustible materials. There was no one in the flat at the time of the fire.

Station commander Matt Murdoch, fire investigator, said: β€œIt is important residents remember to turn off electrical items when they are not in use and especially when you are not at home, particularly items like fans that are not designed to be left on around the clock. Although some significant damage has been caused to the flat, luckily, no one has been injured in this fire.”
