CCTV footage shows shocking moment drink-driver swerves through market square in Cambridgeshire and crashes

Shocking CCTV footage has been released by Cambridgeshire police showing a drink-driver swerving around a market square before crashing into metal barriers.

Clyde King, 25, of Samuel Jones Crescent, Little Paxton, was nearly double the legal limit when he got behind the wheel at about 1.30am on May 29 in St Neots.

Almost immediately, he smashed his Audi S3 into barriers - but then drove off.

CCTV operators alerted the police and an officer on patrol in nearby Little Paxton noticed the vehicle, which had significant damage to its front end and was smoking heavily.

The officer stopped King, who refused to take part in a roadside breath test and was arrested.

In custody, he completed the test and gave a reading of 67mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mg.

King admitted driving with alcohol levels above the legal limit and was banned at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 23, from driving for 18 months. He was fined £162 and ordered to pay £85 towards prosecution costs.

Sgt Aaron Murphy said: “This collision could have been far worse. Fortunately, King’s Audi and the metal barriers were the only casualties on this occasion.

“Drink driving is completely unacceptable. It significantly increases your chances of being involved in a serious, or even fatal, collision.

“Those who decide to drink drive are putting their lives and those of other innocent people at risk.

“I hope King has learnt his lesson and won’t make the same mistake again.”

Cambridgeshire police have revealed that they have arrested more than 460 suspected drink or drug-drivers so far this year.

A campaign has been launched reminding people that drink or drug-driving can destroy lives and that it is not just the driver that is put at risk.

To report a drink driver, use Cambridgeshire Constabulary’s confidential hotline on 0800 032 0845. If someone is in immediate danger, always call 999.
